NORTH TO ALASKA –WE HAVE REACHED ALASKA!

TRIP DAY – 25
DAILY MILES  -  390
TOTAL MILES – 4,392

7/9 – We left Whitehorse early and headed toward the Alaska border crossing on the first rainy day of our trip.  One after 24 sunny, beautiful days can’t be complained about. The plan was to make the drive over two days as the road was reported to be bad.  It wasn’t just bad it was TERRIBLE!  Over three hundred miles of the drive was frost heaves, pot holes and dirt-gravel surface.  We did well to average 40 miles per hour.  After driving a while we decided to go all the way to the border and then on to Tok, AK as we didn’t want to spend two days fighting the drive.  The RV which we had just washed a couple days earlier is now covered in mud.

The Canada portion of the Alaska Highway - Whitehorse to the border.

When we arrived at the border we had driven over 4,300 miles since leaving home.  Somehow, it doesn’t seem that far when you are doing it a few hundred miles at a time.  Ninety miles from the border crossing we arrived at Tok, the first town in Alaska.  Here we are staying in the Sourdough Campground which promises great sourdough pancakes for breakfast.

We leave here today and head south toward Valdez.  More from down the road….
