6/30 – Today we drove to Lake Louise Village via the Bow Valley scenic road. We headed straight to see the lake and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel where we had lunch. This is one of the most popular destinations in Canada and we wanted to beat the daily tour-bus invasion. Next we stopped by the Lake Louise Visitor Center to see the displays and movie. Then we checked in the national park campground and spent the afternoon biking the Bow River trail
7/1 – We left Lake Louise and headed 142 miles north on the Icefield Parkway toward Jasper National Park. The parkway runs through the Rocky Mountains presenting scenery of rivers, glaciers, waterfalls, passes and green lakes. It’s spectacular! A stop at the Columbia Icefield Centre on the parkway gave us a great view of the Columbia Icefield which is comprised of 8 major glaciers and covers 125 square miles. We arrived in downtown Jasper during the Canada Day parade so we headed to the Jasper Tramway to avoid later crowds. The view was beautiful from the mountain top. It was then on to Whistler campground to escape the 92 degree heat. This is the first summer like temperatures we have encountered. The usual daily highs are in the low to mid 70s which are due to return by mid-week.
7/2 – Today we drove from Jasper NP to Grande Prairie, Alberta and are camped in the Tamarack RV Park which is very nice. We’ll use this afternoon to catch-up laundry and do chores. In the morning we are planning to visit the local pioneer museum, resupply at Walmart and drive to Dawson Creek in British Columbia, Canada.
