NORTH TO ALASKA! – US National Parks Tour – Lassen Volcanic National Park & Lake Tahoe, CA

TRIP DAY – 83
DAILY MILES – 197
TOTAL MILES – 10,132

9/5- Arrived at Lassen Volcanic National Park yesterday afternoon through the North Entrance stopping at the Loomis Museum to see the exhibits and film before getting a campsite at Manzanita Lake NP Campground.  This morning we left before 8 AM to drive the 30-mile Lassen Volcanic NP Highway through the park, stopping at many viewpoints to see the hydrothermal and volcanic scenes.  The road from north to south allows you to drive the inside lane and is not as scary as being next to the sheer drop-offs.  At the South Entrance Visitor Center we stopped to see their displays before heading out of the park.

After driving 197 miles south we arrived at Lake Tahoe, CA where we circled the California side of the Lake to arrive at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park to camp.  This is a state campground with 175 sites but only about a dozen are being used.  From Labor Day until heavy snow cover the park isn’t busy, but snow brings folks here for the winter sports.  We are less than 20 miles from Squaw Valley and multiple ski resorts.  The state park is used mostly for cross-country skiing.  We plan on spending a few hours on the lake shore tomorrow and then head south toward Yosemite National Park.
