8/31- Arrived at Redwood National Forest and checked into Mill Creek Campground. All campgrounds in the National Park are operated by the California State Parks. The campground is in old-growth redwood forest and we are camped under trees 200 to 300 feet tall and 60 plus feet in circumference that are 500 to 2,000 years old. It’s awesome!
9/1- Today we back tracked to the very north
section of the park and hiked to the Stout Grove from the Jedediah Smith
Redwoods State Park. (The National Park
is called Redwood – no s, but the State Park is Redwoods.) This is the longest hike
yet at about 3 miles and we were really ready to get back to the RV. The trees are unbelievable and I love hiking
in the forest so this was a really special day.
9/2- There are three state parks that run the
length of the national park and we moved south today to the last one – Elk Prairie
Campground. We did get to see the elk
herd as the campground is a combination of old-growth forest and prairie. Another hike through the tall trees and time
for a late afternoon campfire with potatoes baking in the coals finished our
day.
9/3- We completed our visit to Redwood NP with a
stop at the south visitor center which is on the Pacific coast beach. This was the first time we had viewed the
park film and we really enjoyed seeing on the screen what we had experienced in
the forest. Everyone should have the opportunity
to visit here at some time. We thought
there were probably a few hundred trees at most, but there actually is over 100,000
acres that contain some old-growth forest.
